The Intercourse Habits of 784 University Students

Receive an understanding for national fashions in college intercourse, we partnered with SurveyMonkey to survey pupils from diverse experiences at a wide range of four-year universites and colleges all over the country — from Harvard with the college of Minnesota to San Diego county. Multiple caveats: The poll was created by reporters, not social boffins. So on the questionable question of intimate assault, we quite bluntly asked respondents whether or not they’d been raped, while most public-health surveys instead explain the act of required sex in a number of other ways as well as a number of concerns.

Much more people will claim that they will have skilled rape if you don’t really keep these things recognize as rape survivors, so less pupils mentioned they are raped within study than have actually in current national university scientific studies. (However, increased portion of men and women within our survey stated they are aware some other pupils who’ve been intimately assaulted.) Also, despite our very own greatest initiatives to obtain a level gender split, more women responded to the poll — it turns out that trouble to getting men to sit nonetheless for a study is a well-known issue.

There are many things that fascinated us in regards to the findings: university women, as friends, have an important fear of intimate coercion; males, by contrast, overwhelmingly worry rejection — as they are approximately two times as afraid of bad performance in bed as women are. But the thing that intrigued all of us the majority of was actually that for all the narrative popularity of “hookup culture,” the students exactly who replied to the study had been remarkably intimately conventional.
